Genesis were formed at Charterhouse School in Godalming, Surrey, in 1967, and are among the top 30 highest-selling recording artists of all time. Their early work, with founder member Peter Gabriel as vocalist, was characterised by complex song structures and elaborate instrumentation. After Gabriel left in August 1975, Phil Collins took on lead vocals, and the remaining three members moved into more accessible pop-based music, which brought huge growth in the band's popularity through the 1980s and early 1990s.

Selling England In Montreal is a 2-disc CD live recording by Genesis, taken from an FM broadcast of their concert at the Centre Sportif de l'Université de Montréal, Canada, on 21 April 1974. It was released in 2023 on Unicorn in the UK, and songwriting is credited to Genesis. The release is classed as prog rock.
