Klemperer, Otto | Mahler Symphonies 2, 4, 7, 9 | CD
Gustav Mahler was an Austrian composer and conductor of the Late Romantic period, born on 7 July 1860 in Kalischt, Bohemia, and died on 18 May 1911 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary. He is described as a bridge between the 19th century Austro-German tradition and the modernism of the early 20th century. His music gained wide popularity after periods of relative neglect, and after 1945 a new generation of listeners discovered and championed it.
This seven-CD box set brings together Gustav Mahler's Symphonies 2, 4, 7 and 9 with Das Lied von der Erde and other lieder, conducted by Otto Klemperer. The recordings date from 1961 to 1968 and feature the Philharmonia Orchestra and New Philharmonia Orchestra, with soloists including Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Christa Ludwig, Hilde Rössel-Majdan and Fritz Wunderlich. The set was released by Warner Classics in 2024 and compiled by Richard J. Bradburn.
