Jacques Offenbach was a German-born French composer and cellist of the Romantic era and one of the originators of the operetta form. He was born in Cologne in 1819 and died in Paris in 1889. His operettas were extremely popular in France and the English-speaking world during the 1850s and 1860s, and his opera Les contes d'Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann), composed at the end of his career, has become the most familiar of his works in major opera houses.

Les Contes d'Hoffmann is a three-disc opera recording released by Erato in 2016. Kent Nagano conducts the Orchestre de l'Opéra de Lyon and the Chœurs de l'Opéra de Lyon. Soloists include Roberto Alagna, Natalie Dessay, Sumi Jo and José van Dam, and the recording was made at the Opéra de Lyon between 1994 and 1996.
