Marillion formed in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England in 1979 and has been recording consistently since 1982. Their output is generally regarded as falling into two distinct eras, one with original vocalist Fish and one with his replacement, Steve Hogarth, who joined after Fish's departure in 1989. The band's differing styles between the two vocalists have often been known to divide fans.

Early Stages: The Highlights is a two-CD compilation of Marillion live recordings, issued by EMI in Europe in 2013 as the first issue on that label. It is presented as the official bootleg collection covering 1982 to 1988, and Fish is credited with vocals. Apart from one track on the second disc, which had not been released before, the tracks were originally released on an earlier collection.
