Jimmy Smith was an American jazz keyboardist, born on 8 December 1928 in Norristown, Philadelphia, who performed on the Hammond B-3 electric organ and helped to popularise the instrument greatly. Smith died in Scottsdale, Arizona, in 2005, and in that year received the NEA Jazz Masters Award from the National Endowment for the Arts, the highest honour that a US jazz musician can attain.

This is a single LP reissue of The Cat, Jimmy Smith's 1964 album, issued by Verve Records in 2024 in remastered stereo and pressed on 180-gram vinyl. Smith plays the Hammond B-3 organ, and Lalo Schifrin conducted and arranged the big band passages, which sit alongside blues-oriented material. Other credits include Creed Taylor as producer, Kenny Burrell on guitar, George Duvivier on bass and Grady Tate on drums. The album reached number 12 on the Billboard 200.
