Thelonious Monk | Les Liaisons Dangereuses 1960 | 2CD
Thelonious Monk was an American jazz pianist and composer, born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, in 1917 and died in Weehawken, New Jersey, in 1982. He is often regarded as one of the founders of bebop, and his compositions and improvisations are full of dissonant harmonies and angular melodic twists. His piano style combines a highly percussive attack with abrupt use of silence and dramatic pauses.
Les Liaisons Dangereuses 1960 is a 2 CD set by Thelonious Monk on the Sam Records label, released in 2017, and it is a soundtrack recording. The recording was made on 27 July 1959 at Nola Penthouse Studios in New York City and contains the music used in the French film Les Liaisons Dangereuses 1960, directed by Roger Vadim, along with some tracks not heard on screen. The personnel are Thelonious Monk on piano, Charlie Rouse and Barney Wilen on tenor saxophone, Sam Jones on double bass and Art Taylor on drums. The release was made with the cooperation of the Thelonious Monk Estate.
