T. Rex began as Tyrannosaurus Rex, a British psychedelic folk duo fronted by Marc Bolan (born Mark Feld) with Steve Peregrin Took (born Stephen Porter). The group became glam rock pioneers and shortened its name to T. Rex in 1970. It had a series of UK top ten hits, including four number one singles. In America its only major hit was "Bang a Gong (Get It On)". The band kept a following until Marc Bolan's death in 1977.

The Very Best Of T-Rex is a single-disc compilation of songs written by Marc Bolan, released in 1997 on the Crimson label in the UK. The liner notes are credited to Roger St. Pierre. The release is in the rock and pop genres.
