Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers is a hard bop group whose origins are usually dated to 1954 or 1955, when the first recordings credited to the band appeared. Its original lineup of Blakey, Horace Silver, Hank Mobley and Kenny Dorham was relatively short lived, and by late 1956 Blakey was the only original member left. The group played a driving, aggressive extension of bop with pronounced blues roots and continued until Blakey's death in 1990, and over the years it served as a proving ground for young jazz musicians.

Classic Albums 1956 to 1963 is a 4 CD compilation by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, released on 3 April 2020 by Enlightenment in the UK. The set comes as a box set of four CDs.
