The Miles Davis Quintet did not exist continuously but was formed several times with different line-ups, and the two best known are the two Great Quintets. The First Great Quintet operated from 1955 to 1958, and the Second Great Quintet from 1964 to 1969. Outside those periods there were other quintets, including one that performed between 1968 and 1970 but never recorded a studio album.

Miles In France 1963 & 1964 is the eighth volume in The Bootleg Series, a box set of eight LPs issued by Columbia in the US in 2024. It contains five performances by the Miles Davis Quintet, including three concerts from the Festival Mondial du Jazz in Antibes in July 1963 and two concerts from Paris in October 1964. George Coleman plays tenor saxophone on the 1963 recordings and Wayne Shorter on the 1964 recordings, with Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, Anthony Williams on drums and Miles Davis on trumpet. The set includes liner notes and interviews by Marcus J. Moore, with interviewees George Coleman and Ron Carter.
