By the time of Emperor Joseph II's death in 1790, Ludwig van Beethoven was a member of the court musical establishment in Bonn, and he was commissioned to write two cantatas to mark the occasion. Beethoven was 19 at the time, and neither piece was performed during his lifetime.

This CD presents Beethoven's Cantata on the Death of Emperor Joseph II, conducted by Leif Segerstam with the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra. Beethoven, then 19, was commissioned to write two cantatas for the occasion, one to mourn Joseph II and the other to celebrate the accession of Leopold II. Neither piece was performed during his lifetime.
