Yusef Lateef | Detroit Latitude 42 30' Longitude 83 | 1LP

Yusef Lateef was an American multi-instrumentalist and composer whose jazz recordings embraced a broad range of musical traditions. Alongside saxophone and flute, he explored unusual instruments and timbres, bringing blues feeling, improvisation and ideas from music around the world into his work. Recorded for Atlantic in 1969, Detroit names its compositions after places and people associated with the city where Lateef grew up. Its arrangements connect soul-jazz grooves with his multi-instrumental approach.
